Due to the current low enrollment in its football program, Sandwich High School has announced that there will be no college football this fall.

The announcement was made public on the football program’s Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.

The Indians have only six seniors and six juniors who returned to play college football this fall, according to the release. Sandwich just had a 0-9 2021 fall season.

“After reviewing our current enrollment in our football program, the administration and athletic coaches at Sandwich High School have decided that, in the best interest of the safety of our students, we will be canceling the 2022 college football season.” , the football program announced in a statement on its Facebook page.

Freshmen and sophomores are on the rise, according to the release, and Sandwich is pursuing a schedule that would allow freshmen and sophomores to continue their season.

“From a program perspective, we are encouraged to ensure that children can grow, learn and have these experiences, as we do not want to put them or the development of our program at risk,” the statement said. “We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our student athletes, but we believe this is the best possible decision to ensure the safety of our students.

“We understand that this is a difficult time for our junior and senior students who were looking forward to playing football. Our first and second year students will continue to work to rebuild Sandwich Football. the statement said.
