Bishop McDevitt will open the 2022 football season against the 5A powerhouse at the Peach Bowl Showcase

Bishop McDevitt, the defending District 3 champion and PIAA 4A finalist, is ready for another tough game of football.

Athletic director Tommy Mealy confirmed Tuesday that Bishop McDevitt will open the 2022 season against Philadelphia powerhouse Imhotep Charter at the Peach Bowl Showcase (August 26-27) at Chambersburg Area High School.

“It’s been one of the toughest times we’ve had to schedule,” Mealy said.

“Between 40 schools in five different states and two countries, we have established a very attractive schedule for our football program, our fans and our children. We look forward to the challenge.

The Panthers, led by coach Devon Johnson, feature two of Pennsylvania’s top rookies in the 23-year-old promotion, safety Rahmir Stewart and linebacker Semaj Bridgeman.

Imhotep Charter finished second in last year’s 5A Final, with Stewart rushing for both touchdowns in Imhotep Charter’s 17-14 loss to Penn-Trafford at Hersheypark Stadium in December.

McD and Imhotep Charter will play on Saturday August 27, at a time to be announced.

The first litmus test for Bishop McDevitt will continue in Weeks 2 and 3, with the Crusaders hosting the West Toronto Prep Academy at 7 p.m. on September 2.

McD next takes on La Salle College of the Catholic League of Philadelphia (September 9) at Wissahickon HS before starting their slate of the Mid-Penn Keystone Division.

Steel-High part of ’22 Peach Bowl Showcase

Mid-Penn’s partner Steel-High will also take part in Chambersburg’s Peach Bowl Showcase, which is expected to include five games over two days. The Rollers will face WPIAL foe Bishop Canevin on August 26.

The showcase plan began in 2020 as “Western Pa. vs. Everyone”, the brainchild of former Woodland Hills athletic director Ron Coursey. Harrisburg entered last year’s event at the famed Wolverina, beating Pine-Richland 26-21.

Coursey is now sporting director at Chambersburg, which is tentatively set to end the showcase on Saturday August 27 against Central Bucks East.
