The Big 12 appears to be in for a crazy 2022 season, with no real favorites and with so many league teams resetting after major roster losses. And that makes predicting how the conference will go all the more difficult.
Even with that in mind, ESPN’s Football Power Index has raised eyebrows — and in some corners of the college football world, created vitriol — by ranking Texas among the top 10 teams for the upcoming season. This marked the Longhorns as a Big 12 favorite, with participants in last year’s championship game Baylor and Oklahoma State, and the typical favorite in Oklahoma, even after Texas’ struggles in the Steve Sarkisian’s first season.
Not all of FPI’s projections drew as much reaction, though the formula did spit out predicted records and standings for each Division I team, as well as each team’s chances of reaching bowl eligibility, win his conference, reach the college football playoffs, the national championship. game and win the title himself.
