The Griffith Swans did well in their first clash against Mangoplah CUE at Exies Oval on Saturday. It was always going to be a tough clash with one of the best teams in the competition, the Swans were unintimidated as they fell to a 19-point loss, 9.12 (66) to 7.5 (47). Griffith came on strong at MCUE in the third quarter and momentarily hit the front, before the Goannas leveled off and rode, against the breeze in the final term, for a first-round victory. MCUE went on the Riverina League’s longest journey without five of its best players and was scared off by a young and determined Griffith squad, who also lacked some of their promising juniors. MCUE coach Jeremy Rowe has praised Team Griffith. The Swans’ performance earned Rowe’s praise. “I know it’s politically correct to compliment your opponent, but I’m being very sincere and genuine when I say Griffith brought credit to themselves today,” Rowe said. “The way they chased the foot and the way they competed, just in terms of energy, was definitely on another level. In the third quarter when they came to us and put the most pressure on the scoreboard they had all day, their ability to be first in football and win competitions 50-50 was very, very impressive.Meanwhile, in the lower grades, it was a start to the season tough for the Swans with a 10.7 (67) 5.8 (38) loss at the hands of the Goannas, with Archie Ray scoring three goals for the home side. Under 17.5, the Swans managed off to a winning start to the season with an 8.16 (64) to 9.4 (58) win. Our reporters work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
